In Times of Hardship…

Rabi‘ al-Awwal 3, 1443

In times of distress and turmoil, we feel a greater need for consolation than ever before. Compared to other times, we act less rationally, seeking reasons of the heart in an effort to loosen the noose of affliction—and in doing so, we are actually doing what is right. If sorrowful matters are constantly analyzed through pure reason, not only does the desire and enthusiasm to act diminish, but it may also lead to deep and difficult-to-repair damage, even to the point of losing mental balance.
There is a common saying among people: “It must be for the best.” Though it may sound ordinary and is often repeated, this expression carries a profound truth. It holds dimensions that are spiritual, social, and psychological.

Let us examine ourselves in times of hardship. We come to realize—by living through it—that our spiritual side becomes more refined, that we are in need of divine power, and more precisely, that we are weak and dependent. Especially in such times, acts of worship carry a unique sweetness, so much so that one may even feel gratitude to God for the affliction He has given.

Let this not be misunderstood: gratitude increases blessings. Therefore, one gives thanks for blessings, and offers praise in the face of affliction. If one were to give thanks for affliction, it might increase; God forbid, for man is weak and may not endure, and could fall into rebellion. Thus, the hardship decreed by God is sufficient in itself.

You have been given a burden that you are able to bear; what is required is patience.

In short, the expression “beautiful in His wrath, beautiful in His grace” is not something everyone can truly uphold. Yet it remains true that no affliction, no hardship, no ظلم (oppression) lasts forever. Trials and difficulties carry us through various stages of life, granting us rich and multifaceted experience.

Just beyond hardships that feel like a dry walnut shell lies the very kernel itself.

Affliction is to wait, to endure, and to carry its lessons upon one’s back—so that in later stages of life, they may be used like a sword against life itself
